Honda Civic (FN) Jacking Points

Introduction

This guide will show you how to lift your FN Civic using a trolley jack and jack stands. This guide is provided as advice only based on our experiences, a hoist is only the proper way to correctly and safely raise a vehicle.

Work at your own risk. AutoInstruct will not be held responsible for damage to your vehicle or personal injury / death as a result of the information we provide. Do NOT place your body underneath a vehicle unless it is supported by appropriately rated jack stands. The safest work is to not perform the work at all. If in doubt consult a qualified mechanic.

Tools Required

  • Trolley Jack
  • 2x Jack Stands
  • 2x Wheel Chock

These tools must be in good working condition, rated for the weight of your vehicle and certified to Australian standards. Quality Trolley Jacks and Jack Stands are crucial for your safety.

Lifting Technique

Before you begin, find a suitable surface. Your lifting surface should be flat and solid. Concrete is ideal.

Place wheel chocks behind the opposite set of wheels to ensure the car does not roll, it is also good practice to make sure the handbrake is engaged and the car is in gear if it is a manual. Next, locate the jacking point as outlined below and slowly raise to the desired height. We recommend using rubber pads to ensure you don’t damage the vehicle.

Once the desired height is reached, place both jack stands in the appropriate locations and lower the vehicle onto the stands.

Jack Stands

Jack stands are mandatory when lifting the vehicle as they are your protection from being injured or killed in the event of a trolley jack failing.

The stands can be placed under the factory scissor jack lifting points located under the side skirt of the vehicle. These are the same points used when changing your spare wheel.

Wheel Chocks

Wheel chocks are necessary when you’re jacking the front or rear of the car and should be used in conjunction with the handbrake and the car in Park/Gear. Wheel chocks ensure that the vehicle will not roll wile you’re working on it.

Lifting The Front

To raise the front of the vehicle locate the crossmember in the centre of the car. This location is approximately below the dashboard and is quite deep, it may be necessary to drive the front wheels onto ramps in order to give you enough clearance to get the jack in place properly.

Lifting the Sides

Behind the front wheels and in front of the rear wheels are the factory scissor lift jack points. The side points are used for jacking the car up for wheel changes, it is often easier and quicker to jack from the sides as they can be accessed easily and the car will not roll. The side points are used for jack stands and as a result, should be avoided if you are working underneath the car.

Lifting the Rear

Lifting the rear of the vehicle is very simple, simply use the rear tow hook. When using the rear tow hook to jack the car up, it is a good idea to place jack stands on either side of the car and lowering the car onto the stands. The rear tow hook is stable however, wheel chocks and jack stands are a necessity.

HID Headlight Replacement

mercedes benz c-class w204 HID

Introduction

This guide will take you through the steps on how to replace a HID headlight globe on a Mercedes-Benz C-Class (W204).

Tools Required

  • Osram 66140 HID Globe

Warning! Before starting be sure to disconnect the battery and turn the headlights on and then back off to “empty” the system of any residual charge

Step 1

Make sure the globe you are using is the same model as the old one. In this case we are using an Osram 66140 HID globe.

Be sure to not touch the globe with your fingers!

Step 2

Identify which globe needs to be changed, in this case it is the passenger side headlight (RHD model). Unlike some other vehicles there is nothing in the way of accessing the headlight globe housing so both sides will be identical.

Step 3

Looking at the backside of the headlight globe housing turn the dust cap anti-clockwise and remove it.

Step 4

The globe is held in with two retaining spring clips as indicated in the image. Push the clips towards the globe and out to either side to remove the globe.

Step 5

Once the globe has been removed simply unplug it from the loom and connect the new globe.

Insert the new globe into the housing and fasten it with the spring clips, and reinstall the dust cap correctly by turning clockwise.

Step 6

Here is a comparison of the old and new globes!

Step 7

Reconnect the battery and test that the headlight is working correctly.

Enjoy being able to see properly at night again!

Changing V6 Spark Plugs

Changing VE Commodore V6 Spark Plugs

Introduction

This guide will show you how to replace the spark plugs in your VE / VF V6 Commodore. Whilst this guide is written for the LLT Engine, the process is very similar for LFX Models, however the intake manifold is plastic.

Tools / Parts Required

  • Spark Plug Socket
  • Socket Set
  • Torque Bar
  • Breaker Bar
  • Anti-Sieze
  • x6 Spark Plugs (1.1mm Gap)

Step 1

To access all six spark plugs, we need to loosen the intake manifold. This will require removal of attached components.

  • Unclip and remove the black insulating material
  • Disconnect the three PCV tubes. Push the tab across and pull outwards

Step 2

Unclip the purge solenoid from the intake manifold. It slides off towards the firewall.

Step 3

Unclip the throttle body loom and disconnect the intake pipe. Also unbolt the support bracket as circled.

Step 4

Remove the five long bolts located on top of the intake manifold. The bolt closest to the front is shorter than the rest. Keep this in mind when reinstalling.

Step 5

Next, remove the final bolt securing the manifold to the engine. You will need to unscrew this bolt entirely, however you will not be able to remove it from the manifold due to a lack of clearance.

(This picture has been borrowed from an LFX engine. The bolt however is identical)

Step 6

Raise the intake manifold and place an object underneath it to support it. This will provide enough clearance to access all the spark plugs.

Step 7

Unclip all looms from the ignition coils. Simply push the grey tab downwards, then press on the connector and disconnect.

Step 8

Unbolt the ignition coils and remove from the engine.

Step 9

Using a spark plug socket and breaker bar, gently remove the spark plugs from the engine.

Step 10

Install the new spark plugs by applying a light coating of anti-size and gently thread them into position by hand. Be very careful not to cross thread the plugs.

Tighten with a torque wrench to 20nm.

Reinstallation

With the spark plugs now replaced, reinstall all remaining components, ensuring all vent tubes are wiring looms are reconnected. Start the engine to ensure correct operation.

Parts Required

  • New Cabin Filter (Optional)

Step 1

Locate the cabin filter, for RHD cars it is in the back of the passenger footwell.

Step 2

Remove the filter cover by applying pressure to the clip as shown in the photo. Once the clip has released you must pull the cover outward and downward as indicated by the blue arrows. The bottom of the cover is held on by a clasp and does not need to be unclipped.

Step 3

To remove the filter you must contort it as shown to clear the plastic trim at the top of the footwell. If you’re reusing the filter do not worry about damaging it as it is highly flexible and unlike to tear.

Step 4

The old filter can now be cleaned or thrown out if you’re replacing it. Upon installing the filter into the car, ensure that it oriented correctly with the arrows on top of the filter pointing to the rear of the car.
