Introduction
AutoInstruct presents a tutorial on how to remove the snow screen / grille / baffle / guard from the air intake of an MK7 Golf R. This piece of plastic is designed to disperse and catch any snow that gets drawn into the air filter. In warmer climates we feel that this grille is not required!

I’ve seen the mods on this intake tested on a airflow machine. You only pick up about 3% more air flow from removing the snow grate and even less then 2% air flow from removing the slots from the front air vents. That’s a total of 25 CFM or less which translates into 1 Hp at best. I use a K&N air filter on my tuned 2017 TT roadster and although the snow grate is designed to prevent snow from being sucked into the filter, I found that it also keeps my air filter cleaner over time, which IMO, provides better long term performance and less filter maintenance.
