Introduction

AutoInstruct presents a guide on changing the headlight globes on a MK4 Volkswagen Golf.

Left or Right Headlight

If you are changing globes within the right headlight, commence from Step 1. If you are working on the left headlight, commence from Step 3.

  • Phillips Screwdriver

Step 1

Unscrew the four screws as pictured, then remove the two trim pieces from the vehicle.

Step 2

Remove the battery cover by pressing the clips on both sides and lifting upwards. This creates additional room behind the driver’s headlight.

Step 3

To remove the headlight cover, push the metal clip towards the centre of the vehicle as shown.

Step 4

Remove the headlight cover and place it aside.

Step 5

Looking behind the headlight you will now see the globe assembly.

Step 6

To remove the globe you need to unplug the black electrical connector (1) then unhook the metal retaining clip (2) by pushing it across as pictured.

Step 7

The metal retainer will now drop downwards. The globe can now be pulled out.

When reinstalling the new globe, take note of the notch as shown. The new globe needs to align into this notch to be correctly seated.

Step 8

Reinstall the globe retaining clip, power connector, headlight cover and lastly the plastic trim pieces as per removal. The globe replacement is now complete. Ensure you test the operation of the globe.
